Daily Sports Roundup: November 21

SportsDatabases News
Nov 21, 2008 1:48 pm GMT

It's Greg Oden and college football on Friday night as the sports world gears up for a very busy weekend on all fronts. Here's a look at the slate in your Daily Sports Roundup.

The Gridiron Spotlight

There are three games on the college football schedule for Friday, including Fresno State at San Jose State. The Spartans have fallen on hard times lately, picking up losses in three of their past four games (including a 41-17 drubbing versus Nevada last time out). The Bulldogs are coming off a 24-17 win over New Mexico State that put them at 6-5 (5-5 ATS) on the season; the Spartans are at 6-4 straight-up, but they're 1-9 against the line. The oddsmakers have Fresno State pegged as the 3.5-point favorite.

Elsewhere on the gridiron it'll be Buffalo (6-4 SU, 7-3 ATS) vs. Bowling Green (5-5 SU, 7-3 ATS), and Miami-Ohio (2-8 SU, 4-5 ATS) vs. Toledo (2-8 SU, 5-5 ATS). The Falcons are listed as 3.5-point favorites in their game against the Bulls on Friday night, while the oddsmakers have the Rockets pegged as 3-point faves versus the RedHawks.

Other Notable Events

Greg Oden and his Portland Trail Blazers return to the NBA hardwood on Friday night for a road game against the Sacramento Kings. Oden scored 11 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in Portland's 116-74 blowout of the Chicago Bulls at home on Wednesday night, which moved them to 7-5 both SU and ATS through a dozen games this season.

There are 12 more games around the NBA on Friday, including Boston playing on the road in Minnesota and the Lakers getting a visit from Denver. Also on tap: New Jersey at Toronto, Houston at Washington, the Clippers at Philadelphia, Orlando at Indiana, Charlotte at Atlanta, New York at Milwaukee, Utah at San Antonio, Memphis at Dallas, New Orleans at Oklahoma City, and shell-shocked Chicago on the road in Golden State.

The Rest of the Schedule

The Boston Bruins will get a visit from the Florida Panthers in NHL action on Friday night. The Bruins improved to 12-3-4 on the season with a 7-4 comeback win over the division-rival Buffalo Sabres on Wednesday night. Rounding out the games on ice: Phoenix at Carolina, the Islanders at New Jersey, Nashville at Tampa Bay, and Anaheim at St. Louis, with the Sabres looking to bounce back at home versus the Flyers.

Finally, the early-season tournaments continue in college basketball on Friday, with the Puerto Rico Tip-Off, the Paradise Jam, and the Coaches vs. Cancer events all staging contests. Check the tourney sites and the sportsbooks for the latest matchups and lines.

News from the Wire

The Rockets were supposed to have Yao Ming in their lineup on Wednesday night, with Tracy McGrady sitting out the contest. Instead, Ming missed the game with a sore foot, McGrady played through his knee injury, and the Rockets lost 96-86 to the Mavericks . . . Jazz forward Carlos Boozer strained his quad against the Bucks on Wednesday night . . . Giants running back Brandon Jacobs (knee) is still a question mark for the weekend.

A Peek at the Future

There are four matchups between ranked teams on the college football schedule for Saturday, with No. 17 Michigan State at No. 7 Penn State (-14.5), No. 16  BYU at No. 8 Utah (-7.5), No. 20 Pittsburgh at No. 19 Cincinnati (-5), and No. 2 Texas Tech at No. 5 Oklahoma (-7) . . .  the NBA's top matchup on Saturday has Oden and the Blazers in Phoenix, while Houston will be on the road in Orlando, and Atlanta will visit Cleveland.
